We’re Red Rose Landscaping, a family-owned crew working out of Lancaster, about six miles north of Willow Street. The kind of Willow Street work that lands on our schedule
Willow Street has no borough government — it’s a community spread across West Lampeter and part of Pequea Township, roughly 7,500 people over 5.43 square miles. The median age here is close to 55, well above the county, largely because Willow Valley Communities runs a 210-acre campus with about 2,600 residents. Add the villas and apartments at SouthPointe, finished between 2020 and early 2022 on the old Christian Herr farm, and you get everything from brand-new plantings to yards nobody’s kept up with in a decade.

About Red Rose Landscaping in Willow Street, PA
The name is literal. In the early 1900s the main road through town was lined on both sides with willows, the full length of the village. They came out later when the roads were widened and sidewalks went in, which is why the Pike today looks nothing like the street that named it. There’s older ground here too — the 1719 Hans Herr House on Hans Herr Drive is the oldest dwelling in Lancaster County and the oldest Mennonite meetinghouse in America. What all that history means for your yard is a wide spread of property ages: farmhouse parcels, mid-century homes strung along Route 272 and Beaver Valley Pike, retirement-campus grounds, and construction-era lots barely five years old.
Around Willow Street we handle mulch and bed installation, spring and fall cleanups, leaf hauling, shrub planting and removal, pruning and hedge work, topsoil, seeding, erosion repair, stone and paver installation, and full overgrowth clearing. Pet-friendly practices throughout. We don’t do monthly contracts — no plan, no auto-renewal, no minimum. You call, we quote it, we do it.
Our Landscaping Services in Willow Street, PA
Property conditions swing hard here between a forty-year-old lot with mature plantings and a lot that was a cornfield in 2019. The list below is what we do in Willow Street, with notes on how each job differs depending on which end of that range you’re on.
Mulching and Bed Maintenance
Newer sections like SouthPointe went in with builder beds — shallow mulch over compacted fill, plants set on tight spacing. Those beds need real depth and honest edges more than they need anything else. Established properties along the Pike have the opposite problem: years of built-up mulch piled against stems. We strip that back, cut a defined edge, and lay a clean two to three inches that holds moisture without smothering the crowns.
Spring and Fall Property Cleanups
A lot of what we clean up here comes off mature ornamental plantings rather than woodland canopy — the campus-style landscaping around the Willow Valley sections drops steadily instead of all at once. That means fall is often two visits, not one. Spring work is cutting back perennials and grasses, pulling winter debris out of beds and hedge bottoms, and getting the property presentable before anybody’s out walking in April.
Shrub Planting, Removal and Clean Bed Edging
Two different jobs, same town. On the mid-century houses along Beaver Valley Pike and the Pike itself, the original foundation shrubs are decades past useful and want removing outright. In the 2020-to-2022 villas, the builder planting is healthy but wrong-sized — shrubs that will be into the siding by year eight. We take out what’s finished, move or replace what’s misplaced, and edge the beds so the line reads clean from the street.
Overgrowth Removal
Willow Street lots run bigger than a borough’s, and the back third is where things get away from people. Rear property lines that meet farm ground grow a hedgerow whether you asked for one or not. We clear brush, saplings, briars and volunteer trees back to your actual line, take the material off site, and leave ground you can mow or plant instead of ground you avoid.
Top Soil and Spreading
SouthPointe sits on 47 acres of the former Christian Herr farm, and that’s a pattern here — good farm ground stripped, graded and compacted for building. Lawns on it settle over trenches and hold water in the low spots. We bring in screened topsoil, break up the surface so the new soil knits in rather than sitting on a pan, and set the grade to carry water away from the foundation before we seed.
Leaf and Debris Cleanup
There’s no borough here, which means no borough leaf program — what falls on your property stays your problem. We tarp and haul it, all of it: lawn, beds, hedge bottoms, window wells, gutter-line drop and the mat that collects along fences and walls. On the larger lots we’ll come twice through the season so you’re not looking at a foot of wet leaf pack in December.
Brush, Vine, Ivy and Overgrowth Clearing
Fence lines that back to working farm ground fill in fast with multiflora rose, wild grape and Oriental bittersweet, and vines coming off that line will pull a fence out of plumb inside a couple of seasons. Down near the Mill Creek corridor it’s thicker still. We cut it at the base, get the roots where we can, clear the line and haul everything out so it isn’t just going to reseed itself.
Shrub and Small Tree Pruning
Sightlines matter on Willow Street Pike. Pulling out of a driveway onto Route 272 with an overgrown hedge or a low ornamental blocking your view is a genuine hazard, and it’s an easy fix. We prune for visibility at the drive, take deadwood out of ornamentals, thin what’s gotten too dense to see through, and cut back anything crowding a walkway. Ground-level work, done in the right season for the plant.
Erosion Control and Slope Stabilization
Willow Street straddles a drainage divide. The north end runs off through Mill Creek to the Conestoga; the south end goes to Pequea Creek and on to the Susquehanna. Mill Creek is already badly impaired by runoff, so soil leaving your lot is heading somewhere it shouldn’t. The village plan for Lampeter and Willow Street pushes native tree planting, porous paving and low-impact stormwater for that reason. We do the yard-scale version — stabilize the wash, plant it, and slow the water down.
Our Vegetation Services in Willow Street, PA
These are the jobs that aren’t really landscaping so much as taking back ground: poison ivy in a fence row, a privacy screen that stopped being a screen, limbs low over a walkway, a pile of storm wood nobody wants to touch.
Poison Ivy and Invasive Vine Removal
With a median age near 55 in this community, poison ivy is not a do-it-yourself job for a lot of the people who own these properties, and a bad reaction is worse the older you are. We find it along fence rows, at the base of shade trees and in the brush at the back of the lot. It comes out root and vine, gets bagged, and leaves in the truck — never through the chipper, since the oil carries.
Hedge and Privacy Screen Shaping
Route 272 is the commercial spine through town, and plenty of homes back or side onto it or onto a parking area. A properly shaped screen is what keeps that at arm’s length. We cut arborvitae, holly, privet and yew to a clean face with the base slightly wider than the top so light reaches the bottom and it stays filled in. Screens that have gone thin at the knees we bring back over a couple of seasons.
Ground-Level Limb Cutbacks
On properties where people walk every day, low limbs over a path are more than an annoyance. We cut back what hangs into walkways, driveways, patios and parking areas, and what’s rubbing a roof or gutter. Everything is done from the ground with poles and hand saws — no climbing, no bucket work, and nothing near utility lines. If it needs a climber, we’ll say so up front.
Storm Debris Cleanup
At 482 feet with plenty of open ground around it, this area catches wind, and the mature trees on the older lots shed hard when it comes through. We clear what’s down: limbs across the drive, branches through a bed, a hedge crushed flat, debris scattered over the lawn. We cut it up, haul it off and rake the ground back out. Dragging brush is exactly the work you shouldn’t be doing yourself.
Lot, Fence Line and Yard Clearing
Properties out toward the Pequea Township side often run back to farm fields or old fence rows, and those edges disappear under growth in a few unattended years. We clear the fence line so you can see and repair the fence, take out the volunteer maples and mulberries coming up against it, and open the lot back to its real boundaries. Everything cut gets removed unless you want the chips.
Chipping and Debris Reduction
Brush volume adds up fast on lots this size, so we chip on site when the property allows it. That cuts the number of hauling trips and keeps the cost down. You can keep the chips for paths, back beds or a rough area, or we take everything with us. Poison ivy and diseased wood always leaves whole.
Removal of Downed Limbs and Fallen Trees
Anything already down, we’ll clear. We buck fallen limbs and trees into pieces we can move, pull them out of beds, fences and lawns, and haul the material away. We work from the ground, so we don’t take down standing trees — if something up top is a hazard, we’ll tell you and you’ll want a tree company for it.
