Why Brownstown Property Owners Give Us a Call

Brownstown runs about 3,081 people across two and a half square miles in the 17508 ZIP, and it’s the most highway-exposed community out this way. PA 772 goes right through the middle as State Street, US 222 runs west of town as a four-lane with interchange access, and the 772 and 272 intersection is one of the most heavily traveled spots in Lancaster County. Meanwhile the south and west edges of town are river and creek bottom. Those two conditions ask for completely different work.

About Red Rose Landscaping in Brownstown, PA

The Brown family settled a mile east of here in 1728, and Henry Brown secured a grant of 1,000 acres that same year on a deed signed by Richard Penn, William Penn’s son. The village itself came much later, laid out in 1843 and formally recognized in 1860 when the first post office opened. West Earl Township was created in 1833 out of parts of Cocalico and Earl, starting at 11,390 acres and 345 taxable households. The Pennsylvania German name is Brauneschteddel, and the settlers were mostly Palatinate Germans farming this ground. That’s why the pattern here is still farm parcels running up against house lots, with old field edges and hedgerows turning up in the middle of somebody’s back yard.

We do mulching and bed installation, spring and fall cleanups, tree and shrub trimming, overgrowth and brush clearing, lawn seeding, topsoil and erosion control, stone and paver installation, shrub planting and removal, storm debris cleanup and chipping. Poison ivy and invasive vine removal too. There’s no monthly contract and no minimum, so call when you need something done and we’ll quote that job. Pet-friendly practices throughout.

Our Landscaping Services in Brownstown, PA

A Brownstown property usually has two personalities: the road side, which takes traffic, grit and glare, and the low side, which takes water. We work on both. Here’s the full list, and you’re welcome to pick a single item off it and leave the rest.

Mulching and Bed Maintenance

This is old Palatinate farm ground and it grows things whether you planted them or not. A bed here that goes two seasons without attention comes back as weeds and volunteer maple. We clean the bed out, cut a defined edge, and lay mulch deep enough to hold weeds down without smothering roots. On the bottomland closer to the Conestoga we go lighter and keep mulch off stems, because damp soil plus mulch against wood equals rot.

Spring and Fall Property Cleanups

Fall cleanup near the highway corridor is leaves plus everything the road contributes, grit and paper and plastic, and all of it ends up in the same beds and fence lines. We clear the whole property, not just the front. Spring is winter limb drop and matted leaf pack, which will suffocate a lawn if it sits there into April. We cut back perennials, clean beds to soil, and take the material with us.

Shrub Planting, Removal and Clean Bed Edging

Housing here runs from farmhouses that predate the village plan to mid-century houses along State Street and newer construction closer to the highway. The older places tend to have foundation shrubs that were planted correctly and then left alone for twenty years. The newer ones have builder beds sized to look tidy on day one and nowhere near big enough now. We remove what’s finished, plant what suits the spot, and cut an edge that holds all season.

Overgrowth Removal

Overgrown is our normal work, not an exception. Vacant lots, rentals between tenants, the back half of a property that’s been briar and sapling for years. We clear it and we don’t act put out about it. On parcels backing onto farm ground or the river bottom, we confirm where your line runs before anybody starts cutting. When we’re done you’ll have something you can mow, fence or build on.

Top Soil and Spreading

Brownstown sits at about 340 feet and the Cocalico meets the Conestoga southwest of town at roughly 278, so there’s around sixty feet of fall between the village and the confluence. Water moves here. On the high side that shows up as scoured swales and thin lawn, and on the low side as soft, settled ground. We haul in screened topsoil, reset the grade so runoff has a path away from the house, and seed it in.

Leaf and Debris Cleanup

We do a full collection, beds, fence lines, window wells and the strip along the road, then haul it off. Properties near 772 and 272 collect more than leaves, and we pull that out rather than chopping it into the beds. If your trees run late, we come back. One pass in early November rarely finishes a yard with mature oaks standing over it.

Brush, Vine, Ivy and Overgrowth Clearing

Old hedgerows are everywhere around Brownstown because the original field lines are still there underneath the newer lots. That’s where the wild grape, bittersweet and multiflora rose live, and from there they move into your fence and your trees. We clear the line back, take vines off structures and trunks, and haul the material out. Along the creek and river edges we thin instead of clearing to bare ground, so the bank keeps holding.

Shrub and Small Tree Pruning

We prune shrubs and small trees from the ground: cutting back off the siding, opening up a window, thinning a crowded shrub so air can move through it. Along State Street we also do a fair amount of sightline work, branches blocking the view out of a driveway onto a road that carries more traffic every year. Clean cuts at the collar, no topping, and the trimmings leave with us.

Erosion Control and Slope Stabilization

Brownstown has flowing water on two sides, the Conestoga River along the south edge and Cocalico Creek along the west, meeting each other just southwest of town. Properties on those edges are dealing with genuine floodplain and riparian conditions, not just a wet corner. We stabilize slopes with grading, seed, matting and stone, and we keep vegetated buffer on a bank instead of mowing it to the water. That buffer is what keeps the bank in place when the water comes up.

Our Vegetation Services in Brownstown, PA

Vegetation work is its own category around here, the growth that’s taken hold where you don’t want it, on things you’d like to keep. Fences, trees, screens, driveways and the ground underneath all of it. Here’s what we handle.

Poison Ivy and Invasive Vine Removal

Poison ivy is thick in the old hedgerows and along the river bottom here, and it climbs trunks where you’ll walk straight into it without seeing it. We take it out with proper protection and bag it for disposal. It’s never chipped and never burned, because breathing it is far worse than touching it. Wild grape and bittersweet get the same treatment when they’re pulling limbs down out of your shade trees.

Hedge and Privacy Screen Shaping

A privacy screen matters more in Brownstown than in most places out this way, because so many properties sit within earshot of 772, 272 or the 222 corridor. Dense evergreen does more for road noise and headlights than anything else you can plant. We shape screens to stay full at the base instead of going bare underneath, cut back what’s crowding the neighbor, and fill gaps with matching plants where a section has died out.

Ground-Level Limb Cutbacks

Limbs over the driveway, the walk, the parking area or the road frontage get cut back from the ground. On a lot near a busy intersection, keeping a sightline open isn’t a cosmetic question. We cut at the collar so the tree seals the wound properly, clear the wood off, and sweep the drive before we go. Higher work that needs climbing gear is outside what we do, and we’ll say so on the estimate.

Storm Debris Cleanup

When a line of storms comes up the Conestoga valley, the trees along the bottomland take it hardest. Soft, saturated ground plus wind pulls limbs down and sometimes takes whole trees over. We clear the debris, cut it into manageable pieces, chip what we can and haul the rest off. Tell us up front if anything landed on a fence, a shed, a vehicle or a line, so we bring the right equipment.

Lot, Fence Line and Yard Clearing

We clear fence lines, boundaries, back lots and whole yards. Around here that often means an old field hedgerow that now runs straight through a residential lot, decades of growth packed into a narrow strip. We take it back to the line you want, cut stumps at grade where we can, and haul everything out. If you’re clearing to sell or to build, say so, because it changes how far we take it.

Chipping and Debris Reduction

We run a chipper on site when there’s enough brush to justify it. Fewer loads going out means a lower cost to you. Chips can stay for paths or bed cover, or they can go with us. On a property with bare ground on the low side, spreading chips is a reasonable way to hold soil in place while new seed gets established.

Removal of Downed Limbs and Fallen Trees

Downed limbs and fallen trees get cut, moved and removed. We’ll stack firewood rounds if you burn and haul off the rest. A tree that came down in the bottomland is usually a muddier, slower job than the same tree on a lawn, and we’d rather tell you that when we quote it than discover it with you standing there watching.

Brownstown Properties, From State Street to the River Bottom

Free estimates and no monthly contracts, ever. Pet-friendly practices, so the yard is safe for the dog once we leave. Family owned for over ten years, and we keep our schedule. If we say Wednesday, we’re there Wednesday, and if that changes you’ll hear it from us.

What Our Brownstown Clients Are Saying

Most of our new work in West Earl Township comes from someone’s neighbor passing along a name. The reviews we get from Brownstown and the surrounding area say roughly the same thing every time: honest quote, showed up on time, left the property cleaner than they found it.
